I-94 Modernization: Advanced Bridges Phase II: CE&I

The I-94 Modernization: Advanced Bridges Phase II project is located in Detroit, Michigan, focusing on the reconstruction of Burns Avenue bridge over I-94, along with associated roadway improvements.
Value Engineering (VE) secured the small business enterprise contract through MDOT’s Metro Region in Detroit for Construction Engineering and Inspection CE&I services. This project aimed to train and certify VE staff in Construction Engineering: Project Inspection for future prequalification in this category. The scope of work included comprehensive inspection services to document field conditions, activities, and progress. 
VE conducted inspections of the roadway to ensure compliance with MDOT standards, plans, and specifications, including quality assurance testing, measurements, reporting, computations, documentation, and payment of quantities.
Bridge Reconstruction:

• Final design included reconstruction of Burns Ave bridge over I-94.
• Road approaches and service drives were redesigned as necessary.
• Designed roadway vertical and horizontal geometry adjustments.
• Included sidewalk design, driveway entrances, bicycle lanes, ADA upgrades, ROW impacts assessment, utility conflict assessment, and drainage design.
• Developed project quantities, engineering cost estimates, specifications, and 3D modeling.
• Coordinated utility conflicts with affected utility owners to minimize disruptions.
• Designed to accommodate all traffic modes and maximize capacity while minimizing impacts to adjacent properties and community resources.

Project Details:

• The Burns Avenue bridge reconstruction is part of the broader I-94 Modernization initiative aimed at improving infrastructure and traffic flow in Detroit.
• Designed to meet MDOT standards and enhance the urban roadway network's resilience and longevity.
